My Quarter Century in the Iron Game by Siegmund Klein

Siegmund Klein, Feb. 1945

Latest Installment in the HOPC Library

By the mid 1940’s Sig Klein had already been in the iron game for 25 years and was one of the foremost writers, trainers and gym owners in the world of strength. To celebrate his quarter century of Physical Culture he was asked by Strength and Health magazine to relate some of the personalities that he had met and his many experiences in all facets of the world of strength. The result is a fascinating read, bringing to life many of the famous strongmen of the early 20th century who Sig knew well. We hope readers enjoy this series.
.-Peter Yates, HOPC Editor

Footnote: In Part 1 of the series, Sig Klein orders his first set of barbells from Milo Bar Bell Company of Philadelphia (see previous post).

BODY SCULPTURE CLUB’S FOUNDATION COURSE NO. 1 – First in a 3-part series.

We’re still trying to discover a bit more about the Body Sculpture Club. It was in existence in the 1930s when it operated in Surbiton, Surrey. By the 1950s they had moved to Worcester Park, also in Surrey.

It was founded by George Jowett and then, some time later, continued by George Greenwood. By that time among the other contributors were Boss, Arnold Dyson (Mr. Universe 1953), Reub Martin, Mervin Cotter (Mr. Britain), Spencer Churchill (Champion Bodybuilder), Jack King (Mr Army, Mr. South Britain), Al Murray (British Weightlifting Coach). A lot of the exercises were posed by Tony Martin.

Introduction by Peter Yates, HOPC Editor

As a youngster there was nothing to suggest the latent potential possessed by Doug Hepburn. However once he had commenced training he promised himself to become the strongest man in the world. In order to achieve this end he embarked on various methods of training, while keeping detail of the results, discarding what was not useful and creating a system that worked from that which obviously worked for him. He became one of the very strongest men of all time and remained so for most of his life.

It had a similar effect for others who put the necessary time and effort into his programs. Hepburn’s system is not flashy but is based on solid training principles which if followed will cut out a lot of wasted effort in a trainee’s quest for both increased strength and muscle size. This is a system for building a firm foundation from which other types of training may be employed. If you are seeking real world power and muscular size look no further than Hepburn’s Law.
