David Prowse is pictured here as the Strongman in the 1972 Hammer Film Productions film 'Vampire Circus'. Prior to his acting career, Prowse was a bodybuilder and 3-time British Heavyweight Weightlifting Champion. Prowse's other notable film roles include playing the Monster in 'The Horror of Frankenstein' (1970) & 'Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell' (1974) (both also produced by Hammer Films), Julian in 'A Clockwork Orange' (1971), and most famously Darth Vader in 'Star Wars' (1977), 'The Empire Strikes Back' (1980) & 'Return of the Jedi' (1983).

Charismatic French bodybuilder Robert Duranton (Spetember 11, 1926 - February 9, 2005) notably won the Mr. France contest 4 times consecutively from 1948 to 1951 as well as placed 2nd in the Tall Class at the 1951 NABBA Mr. Universe to Overall winner Reg Park. After his competitive bodybuilding days, Duranton later tried his hand at professional wrestling and had a career which lasted some 20 years from the early 1950s until the early 1970s.

Duranton had that carved, classical look so favored by the Europeans at that time.Of course Europe was still suffering from massive deprivation and food shortages, so even if desired building the type of bulk becoming popular in the USA at the time was not an easy task anyway.He was often featured in H&S magazine even long after he had finished competing such was his appeal.

I want to give you three photos, these are photographs from the book "Heavy Athletics" from Ivan Lebedev, as we call it "Uncle Vanya". In his book, Ivan in detail and clearly tells about the Russian athletes and foreigners. So on one of these photos depicts the power feats that the strong men showed earlier.

Yeah, I think Robert Duranton was a prime example of the classic Apollonian physique.

Perfect proportions and classic statue poses . Years ago I took a friend of mine to a bodybuilding show (regional).
She was an art major at Syracuse University . " What do you think ?" I asked her ." For the most part they look like
a bunch of body parts stuck together. No grace . No flow . Despite the bulging muscles there seemed no athletic
grace to most of the physiques displayed ". I think if Duranton or Clancy Ross were on that stage it might have
changed her mind . The Europeans through the 80s found that happy balance along with the Zanes and Baldwins
of the bodybuilding world.
